A non-invasive solution to the problem of discoloured, chipped, pitted or otherwise unappealing teeth. They can also make slightly crooked teeth appear straighter without wearing braces. Veneers are very thin “shells” which are stuck to the front (anterior) surfaces of the teeth. Veneers can be coloured to match your existing teeth, creating a natural look but without the imperfections.
Different types of veneers on offer
There are three main types of dental veneers available: composite resin, porcelain and CEREC. Composite resin veneers give excellent end results and are cheaper than their porcelain counterparts. They tend to be slightly less long-lasting than porcelain options, but can still last for years with correct care.
Porcelain veneers tend to be regarded as superior, due to their greater longevity and their greater resistance to staining. CEREC veneers may be made of either porcelain or resin, but can be created on site using CAD/CAM technology. This means that patients can obtain their veneers the same day, without having to wait weeks for their veneers to come back from the lab.
Your dentist can advise on which veneers are going to be most appropriate.
What happens during a veneer treatment?
Prior to applying the veneers, the tooth may need to be cleaned and prepared, which usually involves removing a very thin layer of enamel from the tooth. Patients have local anaesthesia for this procedure. Once the teeth have been prepared for veneers, impressions are taken if the veneers are to be made at a lab.
If CEREC is used, the teeth are photographed using a special camera, with the information being relayed to CAD/CAM software which creates veneers to the exact dimensions needed. The final stage of the veneer treatment is for the veneers to be fixed on to the teeth.
Once in place, veneers can be cleaned and looked after in the same way as the rest of your teeth.
